About the beer from the Austrian brewery Brauerei Schloss Starkenberg, wrote recently. That was Gold Lager and I was not particularly impressed by it, or rather it seemed very mediocre. When I found on sale Tiroler Märzen I bought it – may be the first impression was deceptive and the other beers of this brewery are good?
Starkenberger Tiroler Märzen (Austria, Tarrenz) – 4.9/11 Aroma malt. Taste also malty, a little caramel, but with some unpleasant dustiness. In the aftertaste a little honey and a very light hop.
Merzen with a strength of 4.9% alcohol, it’s kind of weird. However, the old BJCP allowed a range of 4.8 to 5.7 alcohol, but the 2015 BJCP says the mertzen should be 5.8 to 6.3%. I don’t profess to be dogmatic about the BJCP, and if a brewer somewhere in the Tyrol imagines the mertzen to be that way, be my guest. But, I didn’t get much enjoyment from this beer, nor did my expectations of the style come true. The grade, like the previous beer from this brewery, is a “C”.
