Gorkovskaya Brewery celebrated its fifth anniversary in February, for which we heartily congratulate it! In connection with this joyful event, they sent me a small gift – four bottles of beer, including a specially brewed for this date – Gorkovskaya 5 Anniversary Coffee Stout.
Yoke Tower (Nizhny Novgorod, Russia) – 6.5% alk. IPA with orange juice, orange zest, and juniper. I first tasted it last December when I was in Nizhny Novgorod and stopped by the brewery. The aroma is citrusy. The taste is fresh, dry (it seemed more caramel in December). In the aftertaste as bright orange, bitterness like orange peel. Juniper is barely visible, and if you do not look for it on purpose, you can not notice it. Overall, refreshing and tasty. Rated B+.
Sour Power (Nizhny Novgorod, Russia) – 6.7% alcohol. Sour Ale with Kalamansi, lemon and orange. A kind of citrus mix. Taste is moderately sour, full. In the aftertaste the whole spectrum of citrus – mandarin notes, orange, etc.. Grade “B”.
Gorkovskaya 5 Anniversary Coffee Stout (Russia, Nizhny Novgorod) – 6% alk. Excellent coffee stout. In the aroma and aftertaste of freshly ground coffee or rather “cold brew” coffee. Dry, a little ashy, perfectly balanced. The coffee flavor is clear, but without being overpowering, which makes this beer very drinkable. A great beer brewed for the fifth anniversary. A Rating.
But Never Jam Today (Russia, Nizhny Novgorod) – 6% alk. Milk stout with orange. Aroma and aftertaste reminiscent of such marmalade – slices of orange or tangerine in chocolate. Exactly the taste of marmalade and of course tones of chocolate. Moderately sweet. I think this beer is for the sweet tooth. Interesting, but I wouldn’t drink more than one bottle. Rated “B-“.
